Weltkrieg zunächst in Behelfsräumen geboten.

You can find all of this and much more information in our chronicle, which invites you to read all about the 40-year-history of the Catholic parish of St. Columban’s in Friedrichshafen.

The parishioners are at home in Friedrichshafen, where they work primarily for large industrial companies. Parishioners were first offered food, not just for the soul, after the Second World War in the auxiliary rooms, and the community center, built in 1966, has provided them with a roof over their heads. In the church they celebrate liturgy, while the community hall and the green are the sites of various celebrations. In the rectory the noise from the nearby preschool is patiently endured. The Church is always open to those in need, be it in their own parish or in the slums of an Indian city. The customs of the church year fill the heart with joy, with church music being rejoiced and artworks taking you by the hand and bringing you to the Divine. The role of St. Columban’s in the church network and a chronological table round off everything.

On the 23rd November 1981 Siegfried Breyer completed the St. Columban’s parish’s first chronicle and, following two further years of writing up the chronicle, published it in December 1983. From 1982 to 1996, Breyer gathered further material on the happenings in St. Columban’s, but it was no longer possible for the 82-year-old to complete another instalment of the chronicle. In 2001, the parish council reflected on this valuable material and decided to continue compiling the “Breyer chronicle”, with a chronicle committee being formed on the 20th January 2004, which set out a rough structure for the chronicle, and suitable writers having to be sought out for each section. In February 2005 the team of writers was decided on and work could begin, with the church parish council setting the 2006 Columbanfest (a church festival) as a deadline for completing the document.

The church parish council’s decision was grounded in its gratitude for followers having been able to come together and pray, believe, hope and celebrate under God’s roof and in their parish for the last 40 years. Younger generations should bear witness to this example.

Every writer was aware of their responsibility, and so carried out their research with diligence and attempted to translate the various dates and facts into an appropriate narrative style. However, as with any task that we as humans undertake, we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of there being instances of subjectivity, gaps and errors in this document. Please forgive the writers for any such instances. Please also understand that, due to technical reasons, the typing up of the document had to be completed by March 2006.

The editing team was pleased to share the chronicle reader at the 2006 Columbanfest with friends and members of St. Columban’s. The team was pleased with how the chronicle turned out, thanks to the hard work of the writers, researchers and sponsors involved in this project.
